Brava: Ongoing Reinstallation of the Lomba Tantum Cable Car Promises to Boost the Fishing Industry — Mayor

Speaking to Inforpress, Amândio Brito stated that the community of Lomba Tantum “is celebrating” the start of the project, emphasizing that residents were already aware that the equipment was on the island and were simply waiting for the technical team to arrive so that the reinstallation could begin.

"Today the technicians arrived on Brava to begin the work, which is a moment of great satisfaction for the entire community," he noted.

According to the mayor, the restoration of the cable car constitutes “an asset for the development of the fishing sector,” the main economic activity in the town of Lomba Tantum.

“Anyone familiar with this area knows that fishing is the foundation of the local economy. This investment was essential to revive the community’s economic development and create better conditions for fishermen and fishmongers,” he emphasized.

Brito also explained that the reinstallation of the equipment is part of a series of investments aimed at improving fishing support infrastructure, including the renovation of the existing Fishermen’s House in Lomba Tantum.

"We are developing the infrastructure of the fishing sector, which is a true pillar of economic development for these communities. Better working conditions also create opportunities for higher income and an improved quality of life for families who depend on fishing," he added.

The mayor noted that since the cable car stopped operating, fish has had to be transported manually between the fishing zone and the town of Lomba—a process considered extremely difficult due to the region’s rugged terrain.

As he explained, those responsible for transport charged about 700 escudos per trip, a cost that was reflected in the final price of the fish paid by consumers.

“Fishmongers were forced to bear these additional costs, and naturally, this had an impact on the price of the fish. With the restoration of the cable car, we will facilitate transportation, reduce costs, and make life easier for both fishing professionals and consumers," he emphasized.

For Amândio Brito, the return of the cable car will make the entire fish marketing process more efficient, increase the sector’s competitiveness, and encourage new investments in the fishing industry.

The reinstallation of the Lomba Tantum cable car fulfills a long-standing demand from the fishing community, which viewed the restoration of this infrastructure as essential for ensuring “greater safety, speed, and efficiency” in fish transport.

It is expected, according to the same source, that once the work is completed, the facility will once again play “a decisive role” in boosting the local economy, strengthening fishing activity, reducing logistics costs, and creating new income opportunities for families in the community.
